The Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS) has released its list of the most sustainable sports for 2023 with Formula E taking pole position.
The GSBS is an independent, global, not-for-profit organisation, which analyses and rates the sustainability performance of professional sports organisations. Its reporting framework is based on a mix of internationally recognised standards and best-in-class reports from different industries – which covers four key categories: Corporate, Environmental, Social and Governance.
This year, the not-for-profit invited almost 500 organisations to participate, encompassing motorsport, football, tennis, and other major sports leagues. Notably, 55 of the most influential organisations in the sporting world, including Formula 1, Premier League, and Real Madrid, participated in the initial assessment.
The ranking reveals that Formula E has maintained its position as global leader for sustainability in sport, topping the GSBS report for a second consecutive year.
The championship was named best in four of five award categories, including Best Total Performance (jointly with Borussia Dortmund), Best Corporate Performance, Best Social Performance, and Best Governance Performance.
“We are proud to keep raising the bar in the global standard for sustainability in sport,” said Julia Pallé, Vice President of Sustainability at Formula E. “Sustainability has been at the core of our championship since its inception, and we are determined to build on our commitment and capabilities year after year.”
“Topping the charts once again reinforces that entertainment and sustainability can coexist without compromise. We urge the sports industry to continue working towards the highest level of sustainable operations and to use their influence to engage fans on the collective mission to combat climate change and social progress in line with the UN Sport 4 Climate action framework.”
While Formula E leads the pack, other organisations are following suit. Football team Borussia Dortmund, for instance, earned the top spot in the Best Environmental Performance category. Likewise, the co-e-racing championship Extreme E placed seventh overall, demonstrating its commitment to its “sustainable championship for purpose” ethos.
Overall, the 2023 GSBS report reveals a growing trend towards sustainable practices within the sporting world. Initiatives like Maserati MSG racing’s “SEVENTEEN” campaign and SailGP’s ongoing commitment to becoming the most sustainable sports network in the world further exemplify this positive shift.
