Nigel Topping, former UN climate change high-level champion for COP26, has been appointed to the Climate Change Committee (CCC) to drive sustainability in business.
Starting in May 2023, Topping will serve a five-year term and lead the Committee’s efforts in integrating businesses into the transition to net zero.
Topping will bring nearly two decades of private sector experience to the role of businesses in achieving net zero targets. Serving as the UN Climate change high-level champion for COP26, Nigel mobilised the global private sector and local government to take action on climate change, initiating the ‘Race To Zero’ and ‘Race To Resilience campaigns’.
“I’m very proud to join the Climate Change Committee. I’ve long been an admirer of the Committee’s work” said Topping “The CCC is one of the UK’s key strengths in the global race to net zero. I’m looking forward to championing the role of business in the net zero transition, and the need for policies that support and encourage businesses to lead the charge. Change will happen quickly if we can get the conditions right.”
Lord Deben, Chairman of the CCC, said: “I am delighted to welcome Nigel to the Committee. He brings vast experience of the business world and played one of the central roles at COP26 and COP27. I’m sure he will drive us to be even more ambitious in our net zero advice.”
About the CCC
The CCC is an independent advisory body in the UK that provides guidance to the government on climate change issues.
Its objective is to drive action towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate impacts, and achieving a sustainable, low-carbon future. The CCC’s expertise and influence contribute significantly to shaping national climate policies and promoting a greener and more resilient UK.
In March, the CCC said the country was “strikingly unprepared” for the impacts of the climate crisis and urged the government to put together an adoption plan for the changes that we are likely to see.
