Multinational conglomerate, DuPont, has received validation of its emission reduction targets by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
The creator of innovations such as nylon, Teflon, and Kevlar has been validated by the SBTi for its 2030 emissions reduction targets. The validation reinforces DuPont’s alignment with the Paris Agreement and their support for global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels.
“At DuPont, we are committed to taking aggressive action on climate, and the approval from SBTi underscores the progress we are making to achieve significant climate targets aligned with science,” said Alexa Dembek, chief technology & sustainability officer at DuPont. “Together with our customers, we are developing the innovative, sustainable solutions that will lead to carbon neutrality and have the potential to make positive change in the world.”
At the end of 2022, DuPont surpassed its 2030 target of reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30%, achieving an 35% reduction based on its 2019 baseline – eight years ahead of schedule. As a result, the company strengthened its commitment with more ambitious 2030 Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions reduction goal of 50%.
In 2022, DuPont managed to decrease its scope 3 emissions by one million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MT CO2e), the same amount as annual emissions from about 216,000 passenger vehicles. In response, it has set a new goal to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions resulting from the purchasing of goods and services, as well as the end-of-life treatment of sold products, by 25%, from the 2020 base year.
DuPonts sustainability strategy is inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across three pillars, innovate, protect, and empower, each of which focuses on a set of the goals.
DuPont’s climate progress and overall sustainability performance will be reported in its annual Sustainability Report to be published next month.
